Balsam Design Build is a local company that specializes in architectural design, project planning, and general contracting for residential remodels, additions, ADU’s, and new construction projects.

Balsam Design Build can take your project from concept to construction to completion. We work as a team to ensure that each project meets and exceeds our client’s expectations. We offer our clients a collaborative process that turns their vision into a tangible reality. We place strong emphasis on design planning related to function, aesthetics, efficiency, and spatial flow. We work with our clients to create unique living spaces that accommodate their individual and family needs and lifestyles.

We are Skylar McGee and Melissa Hyde. Both born and raised in Oakland. We are proud and honored to be designing and building projects in the Bay Area. Skylar is a General Contractor with 20 years’ experience in residential design, remodeling, and general construction. Skylar has many years of hands-on experience with building trades including finish carpentry, custom cabinetry, electrical, and plumbing work. Skylar is a builder and craftsman who values quality and precision. Melissa has been a successful business owner and educator in the Bay Area for 16 years prior to joining Balsam Design Build in 2015. Melissa has a background in art, is passionate about design, and values creativity. Together we create relationships with our clients to guide them through the design and build construction process. We value communication and transparency as there are many details and options to consider during the design and build process.

While we do provide architectural design services, we also work with clients that have architectural and structural plans in hand and are looking for a trusted and experienced contractor. We provide construction cost estimates to fit our clients budget and can offer ideas of how to reach architectural goals within budget. We have long standing and trusted relationships with our high integrity subcontractors, trade specialists, and suppliers that cover all aspects of residential design remodeling and construction. We have experience in updating and implementing plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems to meet current and future usages lowering environmental impact including solar and battery backup systems. Balsam Design Build also offers custom cabinetry and millwork that can add unique, creative, and functional spaces within your home.
